A fab spring week here-and the Masters!

Posted by Andrew Murray on Apr 18

Last week was certainly a great week for golf here in Cheshire, superb spring sunshine very bright and just perfect for golf ,and practice! But the Masters in Georgia looked fab too didn’t it?

What an incredible Masters it was this year, Tiger, the old boys and 2 Englishmen….it was compelling viewing and I have to say one of the best in recent times. How Lee must have been feeling playing with and against a man inspired in Phil Mickleson? Having holed a full shot at the 14th to back in it in round 3, the final day was amazing. Lee was steadiness personified , Phil a magician with his recovery play from deep in the ‘woods’ at holes 9,11 and wow the  13th! what a shot that was, a 6 iron over the creek to 4feet off the pine straw in the pine trees from 200 yards! A true shot of a Master, poor Westwood, he never put a foot wrong looked for all the world a major winner….and he will be, soon!

And now back to Cheshire..

I held a short game school at Portal G&CC on Monday that was most enjoyable, and I hope the guys there had a good and informative time too. The next one scheduled is hosted at Lymm GC next Friday, my home club where the short game area is looking great again after its winter under snow & ice!

My course design project has been completed for 6 months now at The Fairfield Golf & Sailing Club on the East side of Manchester, but now is the really exciting time. The Captains drive in last week was a tremendous success, and I acted as his ‘tour caddy’ for the closing 5 holes of his round, this was the the first time the members had played the new lay out. The buzz around the whole place was fantastic, they now have a course to more than rival all around. From a previously very short , tight course the additional 17 acres have accommodated 6 new holes. An increased 2 shots on par, and an extra 600 yards. It really is a great challenge now, and I am so proud to have been part of this project. The team from the club, Souters Sports the contractor & Golf Design Scotland , the land owner UU and myself, I think have created a real legacy for the members and local community.

Only time will tell as to have the members fare with it, I hope they all look after and nurture it in it’s youth. I will plant  tree near the 18th green this coming week as my donation and apprectiation to the members for their support and patience throughout the whole project- thanks guys!

Next for me is out corporate club event at Conway, 54 guests competing to win a trip to my very favourite place The Turnberry Hotel and course. Does it get better than that? NO!

The guys from Turnberry support our events annually, and we look forward to greeting them in sunny Wales on Tuesday. We will announce our Autumn trip to play the Ailsa course too this week also, it’s a 2 day trip to stay at  the hotel and play both courses, book soon though as places are limited and I think will go quickly.

enough for now, cheers A
