Course Reviews - Formby

FormbyFormby has hosted many major amateur events throughout its long and distinguished history, including the British Amateur Championship and the Curtis Cup.

A truly magnificent golf course and certainly in my top 10 in England.

Several holes are carved through the pine forest, yet the turf and feel is that of a true links, without the feeling of being exposed to the strong winds from the North Sea.

Formby is quite unique in that the Formby Ladies Course, also magnificent is situated within the Championship Course, A par 72 course which has a real mix of holes, doglegs both ways, short and long par 3’s as well as a variety of testing par 4’s.

My more favoured part of the course would be those holes in and alongside the huge pine trees that are home to the famous Formby red squirrels.  Especially holes 7 and 8, one shortish dogleg par 4 to the right, the other a fabulous sweeping dogleg to the left, par 5 from an elevated tee.

The 16th, the shortest par 3 on the golf course is also in my opinion the most difficult.  A small yet undulating target slightly elevated, surrounded by pot bunkers only 150yds away.  A testing shot whichever way the wind is blowing.

Formby is a traditional Golf Club, yet still proffers a warm welcome.  I especially recommend the home made cakes in the Ladies Clubhouse!
